Desenrascanço

"Desenrascanço (loosely translated as "disentanglement") is a Portuguese word used in common language in Portugal, to express an ability to solve a problem without the adequate tools or proper technique to do so, and by use of sometimes imaginative resourcefulness when facing new situations."

I am a genuine admirer of people who can think laterally. I also admire a person who can think well when a situation that demands they have to outwit the problem at hand.

My problem comes with the insane and casual attitude the portuguese have at explaining or excusing moronic behaviour with "Desenrascanço".

"Desenrascanço" does not mean not buying the correct tool because you are too stupid to know what the correct tool is. It is not, avoiding at all costs, the best way of doing the job. It is not doing something one way because "that is how it is done here". These are excuses for remedial and stupid behaviour. These are the characterstics of fools.

This problem of complicating a course of action because of a lack of resources is endemic in Portugal. It is not the richest country (it could never by accused of that) and thus the correct use of resources should always be found. But when a course of action is so blatantly pathetic (aka the picture above) then you have to question whether the person deserves to be part of the gene-pool.

To have an attitude more akin to McGyver where everything has to be made up out of empty toilet paper rolls, a roll of adhesive tape and a prayer to the closest god, is not the best way to make or repair anything (TV series are not real life - sorry folks).

The problem does not lie with the "Desenrascanço" but with people who are avoiding at all costs to do the best thing, choose the correct course of action, follow the best practice, OR SIMPLY DO THE RIGHT THING.

One has to remember that "Desenrascanço" it is the solving of problems WITHOUT proper equipment, WITHOUT training, or WITHOUT knowledge. It is not the quaint way to excuse stupidity or the fact you were too greedy to buy the correct tool or pay for someone to do the right job.

This is the 21st century so wake up, stop doing the mimumum and start doing the best you can and join the modern world.

"Desenrascanço" is the art of not following best PRACTICE, it is the slap-dash way an amateur creates an essay at university from copy and paste from the internet, the way a teacher does not prepare for a lesson with their students and then says "Desenrascanço" when they repeat a lesson again, they way a bank charges you for an appraisal on a property but when the client supplies all the information (sorry this is corruption and I shall cover this later), the way civil servants deal with the public, it is the course of action by amateurs playing at being professionals.

So to finish. Try to be an adult. Do the correct thing. Use the correct tools. Read the instructions. And stop listening to the the little voices in your head that say ....Desenrascanço...that's good enough. IT IS NOT.

(If you have an opinion on this and you think I care about your opinion then don't bother. If you think I don't understand the subject do yourself another favour, don't bother because I have not even covered the full subject yet).

I was working part time in a five and dime. My boss was Mr. Magee. He was six foot four and full of muscles and walked like an Egyptian, but I was happy to be stuck with him. One manic Monday, while I was busy working for the weekend, I overheard him make a careless whisper.
